Storm Aftermath: A Surprising Look at Kalama Park in Kihei
On January 10, 2025, South Maui experienced one of the most powerful thunderstorms in recent memory. Thunder rumbled so intensely that it felt like my Kihei condo was shaking, while flashes of lightning lit up the early morning sky. The storm knocked out power across all of South Maui for several hours, leaving many of us in the dark well after daylight.
As the power remained out, I decided to take a walk down to Kalama Park to see what kind of damage the storm had caused. What I found was surprising, to say the least.
The damage to Kalama Park was extensive but fascinating. Several large trees had been completely uprooted, their massive roots exposed to the air. Other trees had lost major branches, which now blocked paths that are usually clear for walkers and joggers. Debris was scattered across the park, and some areas looked like they’d been rearranged by the storm’s winds.
What made the day even more unexpected was the sight of snow on top of Haleakalā. It’s rare, but not unheard of, to see snow on the summit of Maui’s highest peak, and this storm brought just the right conditions for a dusting of white across the top. It was an unusual sight that added to the overall sense of surprise the storm left behind.
While the scene at Kalama Park was chaotic, it was also intriguing to see the park in such an altered state. Kalama Park is usually a serene and predictable spot, but this unexpected makeover highlighted just how powerful and unpredictable nature can be.
I took about 30 photos during my walk, capturing the fallen trees, blocked paths, and the general storm damage. You can check out the full photo album [here]. It’s not every day you see Kalama Park looking like this, and it’s definitely worth a look if you’re curious about the storm’s impact.
Power was restored to Kihei and the rest of South Maui later in the morning, but the cleanup at Kalama Park will likely take a bit longer. If you’re in the area and curious, it’s still a great place to take a walk (just watch your step around the debris).
