About Cafe O’Lei at The Plantation (formerly Mill House)
Michael and Dana Pastula have been married for over 35 years. Mike has worked as a chef for Hyatt and Sheraton hotels, The Lodge at Koele, Aston Wailea, and Outrigger Resorts Hawaii.
Dana brought her food and beverage experience from working in hotel restaurant management at Hyatt Hotels, Manele Bay Resort, and the Wailea Four Seasons Resort.
Dana opened the first Cafe O’Lei in Makawao, Maui in 1997. It all started as a 5-table outdoor cafe serving sandwiches, salads, coffee, and tea in Maui’s Upcountry.
It didn’t take long for her husband to join her at Cafe O’Lei, with Mike leaving his job as executive chef for the Outrigger Resort in Wailea to focus on expanding their business. The Cafe O’Lei brand quickly evolved into one of Maui’s favorite and most trusted for quality restaurants and catering on the island.
Mike and Dana enjoy spending time with their daughters, Cherub Lang and Claire Byler, who also work at the restaurants along with their husbands, Dan Lang and Darren Byler.
More than anything else, they enjoy being with their five grandsons who happen to also be their most excitable food critics. Cafe O’Lei is truly a family-owned and family-run business!
Cafe O’Lei at The Mill House Restaurant sits in the heart of the Maui Tropical Plantation, surrounded by farmland, and overlooking the breathtaking Waikapu Valley.
The menu features well-known Cafe O’Lei favorites such as the Seared Ahi, Slow Cooked Lamb Shank, Pan-Fried Roast Jidori Chicken, and Hand Tossed Flatbread Pizzas.
The Muscovado Bar at Cafe O’Lei at The Mill House offers unique cocktails, made from scratch, using local herbs and fruit which is squeezed, muddled, and cut fresh.
Cafe O’Lei at The Mill House makes it a priority to have close, working relationships with farmers around the island of Maui.
This translates to an experience that is varied, endlessly creative….and unique on the island of Maui.
According to these Cafe O’Lei at the Plantation Maui patrons
“Awesome food, reasonable prices, beautiful setting, and great service. Best meal we have have in Maui so far and would highly recommend. Most other decent restaurants are crazy expensive and this place is an amazing find. Mahi mahi, rib-eye, calamari, onion soup, and donuts were all stand out dishes.”

“Beautiful grounds tasty food and excellent drinks. Definitely worth a stop for happy hour.”

“Good food and great atmosphere. Really nice to sit outside. Not the same as the old Mill House but the new ownership is doing well with it!”
Kristy S., April 2022
“Dinner is apparently the best time to go but lunch wad quite good. Wait staff knowledgeable and friendly and food well prepared. The PLACE is amazing though. Go for the experience!”
Jonathan Z., April 2022
“Appetizer was delicious – Ahi Nachos. Did not particularly care for the main course – catch of the day. Lovely location though and attentive staff. Definitely would go back for those Nachos – Ahí was so fresh and delicious.”
Isabella M., April 2022
“I absolutely love Cafe O’Lei at the Mill House. First, the grounds are spacious, beautiful, tranquil, and well kept. There’s a path that surrounds a pond with ducks and an old rustic wheel and water features. We took a leisurely walk around the grounds before dinner and took lots of pics of the foliage. Reservations are highly recommended as it is a very busy place.
The service was on excellent. Dinner was amazing and delicious! Appetizers – the sautéed mushrooms with broccolini and the fried calamari were mouth wateringly delicious. Entrees – fish entree that was the special … it was the whole fish! Fried and placed atop this great sauce it was accompanied with jasmine rice. Our second entree was the lamb. It was a huge piece of lamb with the meat that fell off the bone and was very tender. The lamb was placed on polenta with a sauce that compliments the dish perfectly.
I would definitely come back every time I’m in Maui.”

We have come here three times during our recent visit to Maui. Absolutely the best happy hour on the island! And the most delicious ahi tuna nachos I’ve ever tasted! The ambience is spectacular and so is the food and the service. This place is a real treasure.
Have been driving by this place for a long time, an today I decided to stop in. This will be my devour and explore restaurant for my next few trip to Maui over the next few months. I have business on all 4 Islands, but need a place to hang my hat when in town…
We are absolutely loving the new happy hour at Cafe O’Lei at The Mill House, located at the spectular Maui Tropical Plantation. Mahalo to Dylan, Connor, and all the staff for an amazing experience. We’ll be back for happy hour ASAP. Cheers!

Huge mahalo to Maui Happy Hours team member Kayla DeLong for visiting the Mill House in Waikapu to get us the updated happy hour menu. Great job, Kayla! ?
We just updated the happy hour specials at The Mill House in Waikapu, Maui. First of all, the entire Maui Tropical Plantation property (on which the Mill House is located) is phenomenally lush, green, and beautiful. The Mill House is well known by Maui locals, and was even voted Best Restaurant 2018. Definitely get up to the Mill House to try this happy hour, and mahalo to the Mill House staff for their excellent service.
